Cirque du Soleil coaches performers to safely court danger.
By Lori Rochelle Roniger
Add teeterboard to the list of activities that place people at risk for anterior cruciate ligament injury. Teeterboard is a fast-paced act during Kooza, one of Cirque du Soleil’s current traveling shows, beloved by the show’s audiences but perhaps less so by its health services supervisor, Bradley Fernihough, PT. Teeterboard performers jump onto the raised end of a teeterboard, which resembles a playground seesaw. This sends the acrobat standing on the other end flying into the air to execute multiple somersaults, sometimes while wearing stilts, before landing on a mattress-like apparatus that gets moved around the stage as needed. Backstage in the show’s artistic tent before and during a late December performance in San Francisco, a male artist stood while a female artist performed a handstand on his hands; a male performer stood on another’s shoulders and jumped up, only to land in the same place; one man performed squats with another standing on his shoulders; a performer flipped through the air above a trampoline; and a man stretched his arms and began juggling.
